The walk rate is the whole argument here. Across AA & A+ & A, Mendez has posted a 4.3 BB/9 through 49.6 innings, and that translates to 4.1 at the MLB level — his stuff strips well enough that his K/9 translates to 8.4, which sits right at the MLB mean, but the free passes drag his K-BB% to 11.9%, short of the 13.5% MLB norm. The 5.6 ERA across levels reflects exactly that tension: enough swing-and-miss to keep hitters honest, not enough control to get through lineups clean. If the walk rate tightens, there's a serviceable depth arm here; if it doesn't, that's the floor too.
