The walk rate is the whole argument here. Witherspoon has posted a 4.4 BB/9 at A+ across 89.7 innings, and when that translates to an MLB context it comes out to 4.6 per nine against a league that averages 3.2 — a gap wide enough to cap a profile that otherwise shows a legitimate 9.8 K/9 and a 4.2 ERA in real innings pitched. The 98 strikeouts are there, the 44 walks are also there, and until the command tightens, a K-BB% of 14% at the level translates to just 10.5% in MLB terms, short of the 13.5% MLB average. If he finds the zone, back-end starter is a real destination; if the walks follow him up the system, what's left is a depth arm.
